Reggie White: ANSWERED THE PACKERS’ PRAYER

The news of the signing arrived in Green Bay on April 8, 1993. Packerland was not prepared.

With the onset of free agency in the NFL, there were rumors that Reggie White, the biggest prize of all, had made up his mind where he was going to play after the Philadelphia Eagles had not offered him a new contract. Everyone in Wisconsin figured it would not be Green Bay, including Bob Harlan, president of the Green Bay Packers.

At the age of 31, White was courted by most teams in the league in need of defensive help — most, that is, who were willing to give him the shirts off their backs. White would not come cheap. While visiting various teams, he suggested he would prefer a major city where he could minister to black youth.

This was one of those surreal personal moments when the earth seemed to move in one particular place. Everything around that spot remained the same, untouched, but for the person in that one particular place.
